The
Ugly Boatman
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman with an ugly
face, so there is no woman wanted to be his wife, and he survived just by
fishing in the river. But behind the ugly face, he is a skilled fisherman
playing the flute, every time he goes to the river always flute and play it
while wait for the fish to come, this man is called Troung Chi.
In the village there is a woman who is rich and
beautiful. However, she too was lonely. Her father was a wealthy lord and he
thought the world of his lovely daughter. So he really keep the security and
the future of his daughter. And so she spent her days sitting in her room,
safe, but alone. Every night the woman always looks at the window that
leads directly to the river, waiting for the fisher to pass and play the flute.
The sweet notes of his flute thrilled her heart and set her imagination on
fire. Until one day the woman asked her father to call the fisherman. But his
father was angry, and said that the man was far below them.
After the incident, the woman is moved so that she can’t
saw the river again, thus made the woman sad. She sobbed until she became so
ill that her father feared for her life. His father finally called the
fisherman, to play the flute for his daughter. Troung Chi sat by the bed and played. As he played, he
felt a mysterious connection with this pour girl who was in a sleep so deep
that it was almost like death. At last she opened her eyes and looked up at him
– the fisherman of her dreams.
However, after the woman saw the fisherman's face, she
disappointed and immediately told the fisherman to stay away, it made the fisherman
hurt. He went to his boat, and as he sailed away, he tossed his flute into the
water. He was never seen again.
Then one day she got a cup taken from the fisherman's hut, the young girl was indeed sorely missing Troung Chi and his lovely flute music. Now that she held his cup in her hands, she raised it to her lips and drank cool water from it. Suddenly she was in a dream. His sweet music filled her heart and she could hear him just as if he was in the room with her.

But unintentionally, the cup slipped from her hands
and smashed on the floor. The music stopped. She opened her eyes and saw a bird
flying out of her window and soaring over the river. Troung Chi’s soul was free
and happy because he had finally won her love. For the rest of her life she remembered
the boatman’s tender love and his haunting music.
